Salvation through Jesus, the Son of God

v5

Basic Biblical principles about sin, understanding sin's penalty, how Christ provides remedy

Man's fundamental heart problem is sin.  Sin has consequences.

Romans 3:9-12

"Both Jews and Greeks (Gentiles, all nations, races/ethnic groups) are all under sin;
10 as it is written:

There is none righteous, not even one;
11 11  There is none who understands,
There is none who seeks for God;
12 12  All have turned aside, together they have become useless;
There is none who does good,  There is not even one.”

Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Are we unable to save ourselves?  Why do we need salvation to be accomplished by God Himself?

The Good News:  Heaven has revealed a Way in Jesus by which we can be saved

Romans 4:1-8

Justification by Faith (not human works or good deeds) Exemplified in the Old Testament

What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found?
 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due. But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness, just as David also speaks of the blessing on the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:
Blessed are those whose lawless deeds have been forgiven, And whose sins have been covered.
8 Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will not take into account.”

How can we be saved
through Jesus & what did Christ provide for us on the cross?

Romans 1:16-17

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek (Gentiles, all nations, races/ethnic groups, in addition to, or beyond the Jews). 17 For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “the righteous man shall live by faith.”

How does the atonement of Christ build a pathway of amazing grace that ushers us into God's salvation gift through Jesus, the Door to heaven?

1 Peter 2:24-25
He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.
 25 For (beforehand, before you came to Christ) you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.

Why does Jesus' atoning blood on the cross possess power to free us forever
from the penalty & affects of our sin?  Through Christ, we can escape the hopeless doom deserved by sinners, including eternal judgment?

John 1:29
The next day John saw Jesus coming to him and said: “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!"

The Lord’s Supper

Luke 22:14-20
When the hour had come, Jesus reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him.
 15 And He said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 for I say to you, I shall never again eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 And when Jesus had taken a cup and given thanks, He said, “Take this and share it among yourselves; 18 for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 And when He had taken some bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 20 And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood!"

Questions for thought & discussion

How dirty is sin?

What's the dirtiest job you personally have ever done, or the dirtiest chore you can think of?

Is there a job you personally have done or one you can think of, which is a kind of work that leaves a person covered with dirt & filth from head to toe?

Ideas:  How about being a trash collector?  Or an auto mechanic?  Or gardening or heavy outdoor farm labors?
How about taking care of pigs on a farm?   How about coal mining?  What about the dirty job of a chimney sweep?

What happens to men who work down in the darkness of a filthy, black coal mine?  After working all day long, when they come out of that mine, black dust stains every part of their clothes, shoes, face & hair. Coal miners appear coated all over, with thick layers of black, and a multitude of underground dust.  Their faces are streaked & soiled with grimy, oily, dusty discoloration marks.  On the inside, from exposure to the unhealthy coal mine dust, dark dirt & mine fumes can be inhaled to affect a person's lungs, which may become dark & diseased over time, i.e. black lung.  This is what sin does to peoples' hearts & minds.  And can be the result of years working in a dark, dirty coal mine.  Also, picture what happens on the inside to people who smoke cigarettes or cigars or pipes for years.

How many years does it take for a sinner to become spiritually unhealthy from a dark, dirty world?

Here's what coal miners look like...

dirtycoalminers4.png

dirtycoalminers5.png

dirtycoalminers1.png

dirtycoalminers2.png

Sin stains & soils everywhere it touches.  Contaminates a person both inside & out.

Most sinners don't realize this, but - in the darkness of this world - people can literally become covered inside with the moral equivalent of mud, dirt & filth because sin stains a person's heart, thoughts & emotions.  Dark thoughts & sinful desires stain & darken the heart, mind & soul.

Sin actually defiles a person, spreading dirt on both the outside (words & actions) AND the inside (thought, emotions & sinful wishes).

What would happen to your stomach & digestive system if person consumed meals of eating & swallowing mud?

As sinners, people can spend years wallowing in the mud.  Pigs do this routinely.  Baboy!

The defilement of sin is
similar to dirt, mud, vomit, pollution, uncleanness, excrement.

Mud, vomit, pollution. slimy pit

The Bible likens sin to these...

Psalm 40:2
He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.

Proverbs 25:26
Like a muddied spring or a polluted well are the righteous who give way to the wicked.

Isaiah 57:20
But the wicked are like the tossing sea, which cannot rest, whose waves cast up mire and mud.

2 Peter 2:22
Of them the proverbs are true: ‘A dog returns to its vomit,’ and, ‘A sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud.’

In spite of all the dirt in the world...
Some people fancy themselves good.  Human pride creates a blindness that misses the obvious truth:  every person has done wrong things, transgressed against God, harbored negative, harsh or unkind feelings or attitudes toward others.  Done things in secret which are not holy.  Still some
boast of their own presumed personal human goodness.  It's far from the truth.  Arrogance & self-righteousness are human or religious forms of blindness.

Some of the people most guilty of the "I'm good" delusion are secular humanists, universalists, atheists, anti-Christian scientists & other proud, intellectual & self-righteous people.

Psalm 14:1

The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’ They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good.

Psalm 53:1
The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’ They are corrupt, and their ways are vile; there is no one who does good.

Are all men dirty sinners?  Are humans born into sin?

To set the record straight, God says:

No one is righteous

Romans 3:9-20

What shall we conclude then? Do we have any advantage? Not at all! For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin. 10 As it is written:

‘There is no one righteous, not even one;
11     there is no one who understands;
    there is no one who seeks God.
12 All have turned away,
    they have together become worthless;
there is no one who does good,
    not even one.’[b]
13 ‘Their throats are open graves;
    their tongues practise deceit.’[c]
‘The poison of vipers is on their lips.’[d]
14     ‘Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.’[e]
15 ‘Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16     ruin and misery mark their ways,
17 and the way of peace they do not know.’[f]
18     ‘There is no fear of God before their eyes.’[g]

19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God.

20
Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.

You may think of yourself as a good person.  However, the real story, from God's perspective, is something quite different.  The indictment of scripture is true about all of us.

How can salvation through Jesus rescue us?

Salvation means God Himself came down to our level, right where we are.  He looked up our address, arrived on our street, knocked on our door.   Right in the midst of our mistakes, the Lord sought us outJesus endeavors to rescue us from our sin & bring healing to our broken lives.

The Lord wants to rescue us from the trash can (where we were living), to bring us out of this world's filth & lift us out of the shame & degradation of sin.

Psalm 40

1 I waited patiently for the Lord;
 He turned to me and heard my cry.
2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
    out of the mud and mire;
 He set my feet on a rock
    and gave me a firm place to stand.
3 He put a new song in my mouth,
    a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear the Lord
    and put their trust in him.
4 Blessed is the one
    who trusts in the Lord,
who does not look to the proud,
    to those who turn aside to false gods.
5 Many, Lord my God,
    are the wonders you have done,
    the things you planned for us.
None can compare with you;
    were I to speak and tell of your deeds,
    they would be too many to declare.

Religion can not make us presentable.  Instead, the Lord Himself, through Christ, on the cross, offers to cleanse us (gives us a heavenly shower) which takes all sin away from us.  Salvation is like a really good bath.  Following that first bath, there will be many more cleansings.  And a process called sanctification, by which the Holy Spirit transforms us, over time, into the image of Christ.

Only God can do these things for us.

When you were a child (or a baby) who gave you daily baths?

The Lord is the One Who forgives us & washes away all our sin.   Just like a baby, we can't really cleanse ourselves.  Why do spiritual infants think we can cleanse ourselves?

Picture the divine bath:  God sprays a divine garden hose over us, like a dog's loving Master, Who cleans off the dirty dog after he has been outside in the fields & returns home all covered with sweat, dirt & mud. Sin stinks just like a dirty dog.

The pictures below illustrate the effect when God's hand reaches out to cleanse us through the Blood of Christ.  The water of the Word & the streams of living water wash away our filth & sin.  We experience the washing of God's Word, & the water immersion of baptism.  Through His blood atonement on the Christ, the Lord brings salvation...

Who is accomplishing the sin cleansing?  The Master (God) or the dirty dog? (below)

Each picture shows a hand appearing from above.  Reaching out.  The Master's hand draws close to cleanse.

The role of the dog is to humble himself, trust & yield to the Master & receive.  A well-behaved canine loves to draw close to His Master to receive food, cleansing, and daily companionship & affection.

The role of the Master is to initiate cleansing when it becomes noticeable the dog needs it.  The Master pours out fresh, pure water upon the dog & cleanses the pup freely.  All the contaminants, filth & stench are washed away.  A good Master affectionately cares for His beloved dog (iro).

Matthew 15:21-28

The faith of a Canaanite woman
21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.
22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, ‘Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.’
23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, ‘Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.’
24 He answered, ‘I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.’
25 The woman came and knelt before him. ‘Lord, help me!’ she said.
26 He replied, ‘It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.’
27 ‘Yes it is, Lord,’ she said. ‘Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their Master’s table.’
28 Then Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.’ And her daughter was healed at that moment.

Righteousness is available through relationship with Jesus, only by receiving Jesus' righteousness, through faith

Romans 3:21-25
21
Now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify.
22 This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of His blood – to be received by faith.

2 Corinthians 5:20-21
We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making His appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: be reconciled to God.

21
God made Him who had no sin to be a sin offering [b] for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.

What is salvation?

What does God save us from?
Sin, hurt, sickness, pain, brokenness, shattered relationships, torn apart families, loneliness, heartache, the struggling futility of trying to improve ourselves through go-nowhere religion.

Salvation means more than forgiveness.

Salvation (in the Biblical Greek) means:  to be saved, healed, delivered, made whole (sozo, Greek)
Strong's Greek Number: 4982

Original Word
Word Origin

Word usage
How the Greek word for
save (sode'-zo) is translated in the New Testament (KJV):
save (93 times), make whole
(9 times), heal (3 times), be whole (2 times)

Who is salvation?
How does the Bible describe the Way to be saved?

John 14:6

Jesus answered: "I AM the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

How do we respond to God & receive salvation?
What actions & responses truly plug us into the experience of being saved?

Thinking ourselves good does not do it.

Attending religious ceremonies or uttering ritual prayers does not do it.

Being prayed for by someone else does not do it.

Confess Jesus is Lord & believe He is real for you, deeply from the heart
Believe that Jesus is alive, risen from the dead, a forever Living Saviour!

Romans 10:8-10
8 "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: if you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

Hear & believe the gospel
Romans 10:17
Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.

Believe in the good news of what Jesus did for us on the cross
2 Corinthians 5:21
God made Him who had no sin to be sin[b] for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.

Believe & be baptized
Be immersed in water together before other Christians & express your faith & surrender to God, identify yourself publicly as a believer.

Mark 16:15-16
Jesus said to them: "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.
16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned."

Come Follow Me
Matthew 4:18-20

18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and His brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will send you out to fish for people (as fishers of men)." 20 At once they left their nets and followed Him.

Jesus described salvation as an action, where we come to Him & receive.
This leads to
an ongoing relationship:  "Come follow Me."

Salvation is a relationship that lasts for a lifetime (not a one-time prayer or event)

Being saved happens through a RELATIONSHIP with Jesus. The gift of salvation is receiving someONE - not just receiving some thing.

When we follow Christ, we embark upon a
real relationship intended to last for a lifetime.
Knowing Jesus is like getting married - and continuing in the same sweet closeness, in the best, most heavenly way, forever.  Jesus is the best thing that ever happened to you!

With Christ, there is no option for separation or divorce.

Christ's full intention is to never leave us. He wants to keep us forever. If anyone walks away, that sad mistake could only occur on our end.

Hebrews 13:5-6

Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said,

‘Never will I leave you;
    never will I forsake you.’[a]

So we say with confidence,

‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.
    What can mere mortals do to me?’[b]

Footnotes:

  1. Hebrews 13:5 Deut. 31:6
  2. Hebrews 13:6 Psalm 118:6,7

Call upon the name of the Lord

Notice the following scripture does not say: go to a church, synagogue, temple or parish, perform rituals, participate in ceremonies & get religious.

Romans 10:11-18

11 As Scripture says, ‘Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.’[e] 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile – the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’[f]

14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!’[g]

16 But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, ‘Lord, who has believed our message?’[h] 17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ. 18 But I ask: did they not hear? Of course they did:

‘Their voice has gone out into all the earth,
    their words to the ends of the world.’[i]

Behold the Lamb of God
Behold the Lamb of God & ask Him personally to take away your sin

Salvation happens when we finally see Jesus for Who He really is.  Our eyes are opened.  And we accept & believe what He has done for us.  We humble ourselves & repent.

John 1:29

The next day John saw Jesus coming towards Him  and said, ‘Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
30 This is the one I meant when I said, “A man who comes after me has surpassed me because He was before me.” 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that He might be revealed to Israel.’

Repent & turn to God
 Acts 3:19 & Acts 4:12

Acts 3:19

Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.

Notice that actions & responses of faith and repentance are heartfelt & personal, directly between you & the Lord.   Repentance is about turning from sin & turning away from religion, to come to Jesus Himself.  Jesus becomes your priest.  Christ becomes your Shepherd.  Christ alone is the intermediary between you & God the Father.  The cross of Christ is the one Bridge which leads to heaven.

This is not turning to religion or church activities like pitch-in dinners, picnics, masses or Sunday school attendance.
This is about turning to God Himself, humbling ourselves & surrendering our lives to the Lord in a real way.  Relationship is totally different than religion.  Only Christianity offers relationship with God directly & on a personal level.

Being saved & becoming a Christian is not about any kind of ceremony or routine ritual.  Or repeating magic words or trying to please another person like a parent or family member.  Salvation is not obtained by following church rules or traditions.  It is not gathered by saying memorized prayers or going through ceremonies of liturgy or sacraments.  Or trying to accomplish a list of good works or following religious ideas or practices (like the rosary or the Lord's prayer).

Salvation is all about the relationship between you & Jesus.

Salvation is through relationship with a Person, rather than anything we obtain through religion, or spiritual efforts. Forgiveness cannot be earned through exercises in religious ceremonies or formality, traditions, rituals or study of seminary theology.

Testimony & a personal experience with God Himself is what matters.

John 1:29

John saw Jesus coming towards Him  and said, ‘Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

Knowing Jesus Himself leads us to Heaven's salvation.  Salvation is in Christ Himself.  Nothing we do or accomplish can add to this.  No one else can save us.

Acts 4:12
Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.

Are you saved?  Really?

Understanding the Biblical definition, where does your heart stand today?  Are you saved?  Are you in Christ?  Really?

What is preventing you from coming to Christ & giving Him your life?

Receive Jesus' forgiveness.  Today is the day of salvation.  You can embark upon the most beautiful relationship you have ever known.  And meet a Friend Who sticks closer than a brother.

Come to Jesus today & be saved!

Don't put it off.  Get real & get God in your life.

Come to Jesus & say:  "I surrender all!"
